What is Emby?
Emby Server is a personal media server. EmbyServer.exe indexes folders and serves clients. Jellyfin is a separate fork.
If you have never used it
If you already run Emby as the household server, this is the project Jellyfin later forked. Install Emby Server from emby.media/download.html on the PC or NAS that holds the files. EmbyServer.exe is the host. Premiere is Emby’s paid edition. It is not Jellyfin. Jellyfin is the 2018 free fork with no Premiere. Plex is a third stack with a Plex account.
What is it used for?
Index movies on a NAS. Jellyfin does this without Premiere. Plex wants a Plex account for the remote-app story.
Emby sells Premiere for extras. That fee is why Jellyfin exists as a fork. Plex Pass is a different vendor’s pass.
Emby apps talk to your server. They are not Jellyfin apps and not Plex apps.
Who is it for?
- People who stayed on Emby after the 2018 fork
- Households that already pay Premiere
- Anyone comparing Emby with Jellyfin and Plex
Current status
Emby (2014) is a current personal media server from Emby. The vendor still points Windows users at https://emby.media/download.html.
How old is it?
Emby grew out of Media Browser and branded Emby in the mid-2010s. In 2018 Jellyfin forked away after licensing changes. A guide that says “Emby is the free Media Browser” is incomplete. Premiere is the current paid path.

Common problems
People install Jellyfin clients on an Emby server
Wrong API family. Use Emby’s clients or migrate the library on purpose.
Premiere nag
The free server is real. Unofficial Premiere keys are bait.
Getting unstuck
Install from emby.media/download.html
Emby hosts Windows and NAS packages. A random EmbyServer.exe is the wrong file.
Open the Emby dashboard on the server machine
If the dashboard is down, clients cannot invent a library. That is EmbyServer.exe, not the TV app.
Do not paste Jellyfin plugin instructions here
The fork diverged. Emby support is the vendor path.
Alternatives
Jellyfin if you want the free fork. Plex if you want official apps and will accept an account. Kodi if you only need a living-room UI on this PC.

Related hardware
The server box needs disk and, for transcode, a CPU or GPU Emby documents. Clients only play.
