DirectX End-User Runtime
Also called directx 9 redist, dxwebsetup, directx end-user, june 2010 directx
Legacy DirectX 9 June 2010 redistributable games still ask for. It installs D3DX and related side-by-side DLLs. It is not DirectX 12 and not the GPU driver.
What you need to know
This is the legacy DX9 June 2010 redist. It is not DirectX 12 or a GPU driver.
dxsetup.exe installs D3DX and other 2010-era libraries. DirectX 12 is already in Windows. NVIDIA App installs the display driver.
- What is it?
- Legacy DX9 June 2010 redist (D3DX)
- DirectX 12?
- No. DX12 is already in Windows
- GPU driver?
- No. Use NVIDIA App or AMD Software
What is DirectX End-User Runtime?
The DirectX End-User Runtime installs legacy side-by-side libraries (D3DX9/10/11, XInput 1.3, XAudio 2.7). Microsoft says it does not modify the DirectX runtime already in Windows. It is not GeForce or Radeon drivers.
If you have never used it
If an old game says "install DirectX", it usually wants this June 2010 End-User Runtime (D3DX9 and friends), not a DirectX 12 upgrade. Windows already has DirectX 12. This setup does not change the OS DirectX version and it is not your GPU driver. Get dxwebsetup from Microsoft Download id=35.
What is it used for?
The dialog names DirectX. The missing file is often D3DX9_43.dll. DirectX 12 is already in Windows.
dxwebsetup.exe or the offline id=8109 pack. There is no newer "DX12 end-user" redist.
NVIDIA App or AMD Software install drivers. This redist will not fix a black screen from a bad driver.
Who is it for?
- People launching a 2008-2015 game that asks for DirectX
- Anyone who searched "DirectX 12 download"
- Users who confused this with the Game Ready driver
Current status
DirectX End-User Runtime (1995) is a current legacy directx 9 redistributable from Microsoft Corporation. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.microsoft.com/download/details.aspx?id=35.
How old is it?
DirectX as a separate redist mattered on Windows XP. The June 2010 SDK redist is the last End-User package. DirectX 12 is built into Windows 10 and 11. A "install DirectX 12" exe from a forum is junk.

Common problems
Downloaded a "DirectX 12" exe
Windows already has DX12. The game wanted this 2010 redist or a GPU driver. Forum DX12 setups are bait.
Installed this and expected a new GPU driver
Display drivers come from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. This package does not replace them.
Getting unstuck
Use Microsoft Download id=35 (web) or id=8109 (offline)
Those are the official June 2010 End-User packages. aka.ms/dxsetup explains they do not bump OS DirectX.
If the game still misses a DLL, read the exact name
vcruntime140 is the VC++ redist. PhysX is NVIDIA PhysX. D3DX9_* is this page.
Update the GPU driver separately
NVIDIA App, AMD Software, or Windows Update. Not dxsetup.exe.
Alternatives
Modern games use DirectX 12 in Windows and ship what they need. The VC++ 2015-2022 redist is a different missing-DLL story. PhysX is another optional runtime.

This redist is CPU-side libraries. The GPU driver and the game set frame rate. It will not upgrade an old GPU to DirectX 12 features.
