Anthropic's Claude desktop app for Windows. The process is Claude.exe. The model also lives at claude.ai in a browser. ChatGPT.exe is OpenAI.

Claude.exe is Anthropic. ChatGPT.exe is OpenAI.

The Claude Windows app is a desktop client for Anthropic's model. claude.ai in Edge is still msedge.exe. ChatGPT desktop is a different vendor. Extra Claude.exe rows are usually Electron helpers.

What is Claude?

Claude.exe hosts Anthropic chats, Projects, and Artifacts on the desktop. The model still runs on Anthropic's side. Ollama is a local runner and a different article.

If you have never used it

Claude desktop is Anthropic's signed-in window for the Claude models. Get it from claude.ai/download after you already have an Anthropic account. The folder is usually AppData\Local\AnthropicClaude. You can skip the installer and stay on claude.ai in a browser. ChatGPT.exe will not load that account.

Current status

Anthropic still ships the Windows build from claude.ai/download. Browser Claude remains the fallback if you do not want another Electron window.

How old is it?

Anthropic started as a 2021 lab. Claude the chatbot shipped on the web in 2023. The Windows wrapper arrived in 2024. Constitutional AI and Claude Projects are Anthropic names. They are not OpenAI custom GPTs.

Quit Claude from the tray and reopen. Repairing ChatGPT will not reset this profile.

Confirm publisher and path

Anthropic under AppData is this app. A claude.exe next to a game crack is not Claude desktop.

Use claude.ai/download, not a Store clone

Anthropic hosts the official Windows build. A Claude AI pro listing is junk.

Alternatives

Stay on claude.ai if one more Electron host is enough pain. Ollama or LM Studio if the model must stay on this PC. ChatGPT desktop will not open Anthropic Projects.

The shell is light. Tokens are billed on Anthropic's side. A gaming GPU does not make Claude local.
