Battle.net
Also called battlenet, blizzard app, blizzard battle.net
Blizzard’s launcher for Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, and some Activision titles. The name is from 1996. The current client is Chromium. The process is Battle.net.exe. It is not Steam.
What you need to know
Battle.net is Blizzard’s 1996 name on a modern Chromium client.
Battle.net.exe patches Warcraft and Diablo. It is not Steam’s store, not Riot’s League launcher, and not the 1998 chat overlay people remember from StarCraft ads.
- What is it?
- Blizzard launcher for Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch
- Old name?
- The service is from 1996. The exe is a modern client
- Same as Steam?
- No. Different account and Blizzard titles
What is Battle.net?
Battle.net is Blizzard’s Windows launcher. Battle.net.exe updates Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, and the Activision titles Blizzard still puts here.
If you have never used it
If you play World of Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, or a Call of Duty build Blizzard still hosts here, this is Battle.net. Download it from blizzard.com/download. Sign in with a Battle.net account. It is not Steam. The name is older than Steam. The window you see now is a Chromium client, not the 1990s chat overlay. Riot Client starts League, not Warcraft. Epic starts Fortnite, not Diablo 4 as first party.
What is it used for?
Patch WoW, Diablo, and Overwatch. Steam can sell some of these later, but the historic PC path is this account. Epic’s launcher does not patch Warcraft.
Selected Call of Duty and other Activision games still use this client. Ubisoft Connect will not start them.
Authenticator, family, and classic game keys live on account.battle.net. That is not an Epic, EA, or Riot login.
Who is it for?
- Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch players
- People whose Call of Duty install still opens Battle.net
- Anyone who should not download Battle.net from a forum
Current status
Battle.net (1996) is a current publisher launcher from Blizzard Entertainment. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.blizzard.com/download.
How old is it?
Battle.net began in 1996 as Blizzard’s online service for Diablo and StarCraft. The modern desktop app is a later Chromium shell. Activision titles joined after the merger era. A 1998 “join a Battle.net game in StarCraft” memory is the service name, not this exe’s UI.

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

Common problems
Agent stuck while WoW updates
Battle.net’s agent and scan are the first repair. Steam verify will not finish a Warcraft patch.
Old “Blizzard app” name
Same family, newer chrome. The current download page still says Battle.net.
Getting unstuck
Install from blizzard.com/download
The official Battle.net-Setup.exe is there. A “WoW installer” on a fan site is bait.
Scan and repair inside Battle.net, not in Steam
The client’s repair is for Blizzard folders. Valve’s button does not own those files.
Confirm the Battle.net account region
A US login will not show an EU-only classic key. That is account.battle.net, not a missing GPU.
Alternatives
Steam if Blizzard later listed a title there. Xbox app for Game Pass. Riot Client only if the game is League or Valorant.

Related hardware
The Chromium client is moderate. WoW and Diablo set the GPU bar, not Battle.net.exe idle.
