balenaEtcher
Also called etcher, balena etcher, resin etcher
A friendly image writer from Balena. The process is balenaEtcher.exe. Extra "flash extra" prompts appeared in some versions. It is not Rufus.
What you need to know
balenaEtcher is a friendly flasher. Rufus is the smaller Windows specialist.
Balena's Etcher writes images with a three-step UI. Get it from etcher.balena.io. Some builds showed extra flash prompts. It is not Rufus and it is not Ventoy.
- What is it?
- A friendly image flasher
- Same as Rufus?
- No. Rufus is smaller and more Windows-specific
- Extra prompts?
- Some versions offered extras. Read before you click
What is balenaEtcher?
balenaEtcher writes an image to a USB drive or SD card. balenaEtcher.exe is an Electron app, so it is heavier than rufus.exe. Extra promotional prompts in some builds were a product controversy, not a Rufus feature.
If you have never used it
If you want a simple Flash-from-file UI, balenaEtcher is Balena's writer. Download it from etcher.balena.io. Some versions offered extra "flash extra" or related prompts. Read those boxes. It is not Rufus, not Ventoy, and not the Media Creation Tool.
What is it used for?
Pick file, pick drive, flash. Rufus exposes more partition options in one window.
Three buttons are the point. Ventoy's two-step install-plus-copy is a different lesson.
Some versions asked to flash extra software. Decline if you only wanted the image. Rufus does not use that dialog.
Who is it for?
- Newcomers flashing a Raspberry Pi or Linux image
- People who were sent an Etcher link instead of rufus.ie
- Anyone who should still pick Rufus for Windows-setup extras
Current status
balenaEtcher (2016) is a current usb image writer from Balena. The vendor still points Windows users at https://etcher.balena.io/.
How old is it?
Etcher launched in 2016 (as resin Etcher). Rufus is older and smaller. Ventoy arrived later with multi-ISO. Etcher is the Electron, three-step UI people hand to newcomers.

Common problems
Extra flash or account prompts
Decline anything that is not your ISO. That prompt is Etcher product UI, not a Rufus screen.
Electron RAM versus rufus.exe
Etcher is a larger app. A tiny PC may prefer portable Rufus.
Getting unstuck
Download from etcher.balena.io or the GitHub releases Balena links
A random "Etcher Pro" exe is not Balena. Rufus is at rufus.ie if you wanted the smaller writer.
Confirm the target drive. Flash erases it
Same danger as Rufus and Ventoy2Disk. Check the size and letter.
If a Windows ISO needs custom GPT options, use Rufus
Etcher stays simple on purpose. That is the product split, not a failed flash.
Alternatives
Rufus for Windows-setup control. Ventoy for many ISOs. Media Creation Tool for Microsoft's Windows USB.
