Apple Music
Also called apple music windows, apple music app
Apple's Microsoft Store app for the Apple Music catalog on Windows. The process is AppleMusic.exe. It is not iTunes.exe.
What you need to know
Apple Music is the streaming app. iTunes is the older library client.
AppleMusic.exe plays the subscription catalog and can show music you already own. It does not sync an old iPod, back up an iPhone, or host podcasts the way iTunes still can.
- What is it?
- The Apple Music catalog app on Windows
- Is it iTunes?
- No. iTunes.exe is a different install
- Where to get it?
- Microsoft Store, not a random exe host
What is Apple Music?
Apple Music for Windows is Apple’s Store client for the streaming catalog and a synced music library. The window is AppleMusic.exe.
If you have never used it
If you pay for Apple Music and want that catalog on a Windows PC, this is the Store app. Get it from the Microsoft Store listing Apple publishes. Sign in with an Apple ID. It is not iTunes, not Spotify, and not a way to restore an iPhone. After you install this app, Apple keeps iTunes for leftover jobs such as podcasts and audiobooks.
What is it used for?
Play the Apple Music subscription library while signed in. This is the job Spotify does not cover if your playlists already live on an Apple ID.
Show iTunes Store purchases and files already in your Apple library. That is still music, not device backup.
Save tracks on this PC for offline play. They remain licensed files, not a DRM-free dump you copy into foobar2000.
Who is it for?
- People who already pay for Apple Music on a phone and want the same catalog on the PC
- Users who moved off iTunes for daily listening after Apple split the Windows apps
- Anyone who should not confuse this window with iTunes device sync
Current status
Actively developed as a Microsoft Store app. Apple documents it as the music client on current Windows.
How old is it?
Apple shipped a Windows Apple Music preview in 2019 and a finished Store app later, then told people to prefer it over iTunes for music. It is new next to iTunes from 2001. A guide that still says install iTunes to stream Apple Music on Windows is describing the old one-app setup.
Versions

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11 on an x86-64 PC, per Apple’s Windows app notes |
|---|---|
| RAM | A current 4 GB class machine runs the app. Offline downloads want disk more than RAM |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- Low while paused. Decode follows the track
- Disk demand
- Offline downloads and artwork cache
- Network demand
- Streaming unless you already downloaded the album

Common problems
People install iTunes instead
Apple now splits music, TV, and devices. AppleMusic.exe is the catalog window. iTunes.exe is the leftover client.
Store sign-in loop
The package comes from the Microsoft Store. A sideloaded Apple Music setup.exe is the wrong file.
Getting unstuck
Confirm AppleMusic.exe, not iTunes.exe
Open file location from Task Manager. A Program Files\iTunes path is the older client. This app lives in a WindowsApps Apple Music package.
Repair from the Microsoft Store
Store > Apple Music > Repair. Apple’s Windows download article points here, not to a third-party repack.
Check the Apple ID plan before blaming the PC
Catalog tracks need an Apple Music subscription. Owned purchases can still appear. That is an account state, not a codec pack.
Alternatives
iTunes still covers some library and podcast jobs. Spotify is a different catalog and account. Pick the service you already pay for.

A working DAC or headset matters more than a gaming GPU. Hardware acceleration can still touch the GPU while a video canvas is on.
