Adobe Premiere Pro
Also called premiere, premiere pro, pr, adobe premiere
Adobe's timeline video editor. On Windows the process is Adobe Premiere Pro.exe. After Effects is compositing. Media Encoder is the sibling renderer you hand a sequence to.
What you need to know
Premiere cuts the timeline. After Effects composites. Media Encoder renders.

- What is it?
- A timeline NLE for cutting video
- Is it After Effects?
- No. AE is motion and composites
- Where do exports go?
- Often queued to Media Encoder
What is Adobe Premiere Pro?
Adobe Premiere Pro is a timeline video editor. Sequences, bins, and an edit are the document. The Windows executable is Adobe Premiere Pro.exe.
If you have never used it
If you have never used Premiere, it is the Adobe app for cutting a video on a timeline. It is not After Effects and it is not Clipchamp. You import footage, cut on a sequence, then export or queue the job to Media Encoder. Install it from Creative Cloud.
What is it used for?
Interviews, YouTube cuts, and multi-cam sequences. This is the NLE job After Effects is not built for.
A composition can sit on the Premiere timeline. The compositing work still belongs in After Effects.
Send a sequence to Adobe Media Encoder so Premiere can keep editing while the sibling renders.
Who is it for?
- Editors who cut stories on a timeline
- People who already live in Creative Cloud video apps
- Anyone who opened After Effects looking for a two-hour sequence
Current status
Actively developed as a Creative Cloud desktop app. Adobe video apps list a tighter Windows 11 train than some still apps. This article is the Windows Premiere Pro app, not Premiere Rush or Premiere on iPhone.
How old is it?
Adobe shipped Premiere Pro in 2003 as the rewrite of the older Premiere line that started in the 1990s. It is not new, and it is not Clipchamp. Current builds are Creative Cloud branded releases.

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

Common problems
Export locked the timeline
Queue the sequence to Media Encoder. Premiere is the editor. The sibling is the renderer.
Opened After Effects by habit
A two-hour cut in After Effects is the wrong app. AE is compositing. Premiere is the NLE.
Getting unstuck
Confirm Adobe Premiere Pro.exe
Open file location. Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro is the app. A "Premiere portable" in Downloads is not.
Clear or move the media cache
Premiere Preferences names the cache folder. A full disk next to footage looks like a mysterious playback stall.
Check GPU and driver pages Adobe lists
Adobe documents Mercury Playback GPU requirements. A seven-year-old GPU may fall off the supported list.
Alternatives
DaVinci Resolve, Shotcut, and CapCut overlap for cutting video. After Effects does not replace Premiere for long-form timeline work. Media Encoder does not replace Premiere for editing.

Related hardware
Fast storage for footage and a GPU Adobe lists for Mercury Playback matter more than a famous CPU name. 4K wants the RAM Adobe recommends, not the 8 GB floor.
