Adobe Animate
Also called animate, adobe animate, flash professional, adobe flash
Timeline animation and the successor to Flash Professional. Animate.exe is the process. It is not After Effects.
What you need to know
Animate is Flash Professional's successor. After Effects is compositing.
Adobe Animate is a stage-and-timeline animation app. After Effects is compositions and motion graphics. A two-hour composite does not belong here. An HTML5 banner does not belong in After Effects first.

What is Adobe Animate?
Adobe Animate is a timeline animation app. Symbols, frames, and a stage are the document. The Windows executable is Animate.exe.
If you have never used it
Animate is the Adobe app for frame-by-frame and symbol timeline animation. It is the successor to Flash Professional. It is not After Effects. After Effects is compositing. Animate still publishes HTML5 Canvas, video, and leftover SWF workflows Adobe documents. Install from Creative Cloud.
What is it used for?
Classic tweens and frame-by-frame on a stage. After Effects compositions are a different document.
Export for the web after Flash Player died. SWF is legacy, not the default target.
Puppet and bone tools on a 2D character. Cinema 4D is not this job.
Who is it for?
- Animators who still think in Flash symbols
- People publishing HTML5 banners
- Anyone who opened After Effects looking for a Flash timeline
Current status
Adobe Animate (1996) is a current timeline animation from Adobe. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.adobe.com/products/animate.html.
How old is it?
Macromedia Flash Professional dates to 1996. Adobe renamed it Animate in 2016 after Flash Player retired. A "Flash Pro" box is this product's ancestor. It is not After Effects 1993.

Common problems
Expected After Effects keyframes
Animate uses a Flash-style timeline. AfterFX.exe is the compositing sibling.
SWF will not play in a browser
Flash Player is gone. Publish HTML5 Canvas or video. That is an Animate publish setting, not a Windows codec.
Getting unstuck
Confirm Animate.exe
Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Animate is the app. Adobe Flash Player is not this product.
Check the publish target
HTML5 Canvas, video, or leftover SWF. A blank browser page is often the wrong publish format.
Install from Creative Cloud
A "Flash Pro portable" is junk. Animate is the current name.
Alternatives
After Effects, Toon Boom, and Blender Grease Pencil overlap at the edges. After Effects does not replace Animate for a Flash-style symbol timeline.
