7-Zip
Also called 7zip, 7-zip, seven zip
An archive tool. The window is 7zFM.exe. The command line is 7z.exe. One product, not seven software URLs.
What you need to know
7-Zip is one product. Version SKUs do not each get a wiki URL.
Igor Pavlov's 7-Zip packs zip, 7z, and many other formats. Download it from 7-zip.org. Ad-network "7zip pro" pages are the usual junk.
- What is it?
- An archive manager
- Paid?
- The official build is free
- Same as WinRAR?
- Different product
What is 7-Zip?
7-Zip is an archive manager. 7zFM.exe is the file manager. 7z.exe is the CLI. Context-menu extracts often call 7zG.exe.
If you have never used it
If you downloaded a .zip or .7z and Windows will not open it the way you want, 7-Zip is a small free extractor. Get it from 7-zip.org only. After install, right-click the archive and choose 7-Zip. It is not WinRAR, not a toolbar, and not a Windows update.
What is it used for?
Zip, 7z, tar, and many other containers from the 7-Zip File Manager.
7z is the native format. Zip is what most people email. Same program.
7z.exe in scripts. High CPU on ultra is the compression setting, not malware.
Who is it for?
- People who want a small official unzipper
- Users who compress with LZMA2
- Anyone who should ignore "7-Zip Pro" ads
Current status
Actively maintained by Igor Pavlov. Version numbers change. This article is the Windows desktop build, not a fork.
How old is it?
Igor Pavlov first released 7-Zip in 1999. It is an old, still-updated utility. The 7z format and LZMA came from this project. A "7-Zip Pro 2026" paid store listing is not the official build.
Versions
Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.
System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | Current Windows 10 or Windows 11, per the 7-Zip Windows build |
|---|---|
| RAM | Dictionary size during compress is the limit, not a listed game-like GPU |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- High on ultra LZMA2, by design
- RAM demand
- Follows dictionary size
- Disk demand
- Source plus archive

Common problems
Defender scans the new archive
MsMpEng can wake after a large write. That is the scanner.
Fake download sites
The official domain is 7-zip.org.
Getting unstuck
Download only from 7-zip.org
Ad-network "7zip pro" pages bundle toolbars. The real installer is a small exe from Igor Pavlov's site.
Associate archives in 7-Zip options if double-click opens the wrong app
Tools > Options > System. That is a file association, not a Windows reinstall.
Expect Defender to scan a new large archive
MsMpEng can wake after you write a big 7z. That is the scanner.
Alternatives
Windows Explorer unzip covers simple zip. WinRAR is a different license. Pick them for format or habit, not a risk meter.

More RAM helps huge dictionaries. An HDD makes extract feel slower. That is the drive.
