Task Scheduler

Windows ServiceMicrosoft Corporation

Also called schedule, task scheduler service, taskschd

WindowsMicrosoft

The Windows service that runs scheduled tasks. DLL-based tasks often appear as taskhostw.exe, not as this service name.

What you need to know

The service name is Schedule. The window is Task Scheduler. The DLL host is taskhostw.exe.

Schedule is the SCM name for Task Scheduler. Microsoft maintenance, Update Orchestrator, and vendor updaters register here. Disabling it stops more than a leftover task you dislike.

Important?
Yes. Windows still schedules work here
Same as taskhostw?
No. That host runs task DLLs
Safe to disable?
Usually no
Feex says
If a task wakes the PC, I would disable that task. I would not set Schedule to Disabled and hope Windows Update still likes me.

What does this service do?

Display name: Task Scheduler. Service name: Schedule.

It evaluates triggers and starts actions: an exe, a COM handler, or a DLL loaded into taskhostw.exe. It is not the print spooler.

History on Windows

Still present

Task Scheduler existed on Windows NT as a simpler AT-style scheduler. Windows Vista rebuilt it as Task Scheduler 2.0 with the Schedule service, XML tasks, and the MMC snap-in people use now. That 2.0 contract is what Windows 7, 10, and 11 still run. The service name remains Schedule.

Task Scheduler service history
Earlier form NT Task Scheduler / AT command
Current 2.0 service Windows Vista (2007)
Still present Yes, including Windows 10 and Windows 11
Discontinued No

Why does Windows need it?

Windows stores a lot of maintenance in tasks instead of always-on services. Without Schedule those triggers never fire.

When does it run?

The service should be running. Individual tasks fire on time, idle, logon, or an event.

Should it always be running?

Automatic is the default. Manual leaves a hole at boot when logon tasks should run.

Can I disable it?

Not recommended

Disabling Schedule stops Microsoft maintenance, many updaters, and logon tasks. Disable one task in the library if you know its name.

What happens if I disable it?

Task Scheduler MMC cannot connect. Update Orchestrator tasks and others fail. taskhostw.exe will look quiet because nothing starts it.

Process host

The Schedule service often sits in svchost.exe. DLL task bodies run in taskhostw.exe. See taskhostw.exe / svchost.exe.

Dependencies

Task Scheduler dependencies
Depends on RPC
Used by Update Orchestrator, servicing, and vendor updaters

Resource behavior

CPU
Follows the task that just fired
Disk
Task files under System32\Tasks
Memory
Small
Network
Only if a task uses it

Common problems

Wake timers

A task with Wake the computer can open the lid-less laptop. Change that task. Do not disable the whole service first.

People delete the Tasks folder

That breaks the library. Export, then disable, instead of Explorer deletes.

Troubleshooting

Safe steps first.

Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows

Read Last Run Result. The service is Schedule in services.msc.

Match a busy taskhostw to a task name

See the taskhostw article. Ending every host is the wrong first step.
