Zoom.exe
Also called zoom, zoom workplace
Zoom Workplace's main Windows process. Helpers for video, audio, and sharing appear as other Zoom-named exes, not as svchost.
What you need to know
This is the Zoom meeting app. CptHost and the audio helper are separate Zoom files.
Zoom.exe is the main Zoom Workplace window. A call can start CptHost.exe for video and other Zoom helpers. Those are vendor processes, not Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation.
- Safe?
- Yes, from a Zoom install
- High CPU in a call?
- Camera and gallery view
- Should it start with Windows?
- Only if you want the tray
What is Zoom.exe?
Zoom.exe is the Zoom Workplace desktop client. It owns the home window and the meeting chrome. It is not Teams (ms-teams.exe or Teams.exe).
What does it do?
It signs you in, joins meetings, and starts helpers. Video capture often moves to CptHost.exe. Windows still uses audiodg.exe for the device graph.
Why is it running?
You opened Zoom or a calendar link launched the client. A leftover Zoom.exe after you hang up is the tray staying resident.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
A signed Zoom build under AppData\Roaming\Zoom or Program Files is the client. Zoom.exe from an email attachment is not.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Zoom\bin\Zoom.exe
- Per-user install is common
- Look for CptHost.exe during video
- Publisher should be Zoom
Can I end it?
Leaves the meeting
Ending Zoom.exe drops the call. End the helper first only if the window is already closed and a helper is stuck.
Can I remove it?
Uninstall Zoom
Use the Zoom uninstaller or Settings > Apps. Deleting Zoom.exe leaves the updater and Start menu stubs.
Should it start with Windows?
Zoom offers a Start Zoom when I start Windows checkbox. That is the tray, not a Windows service named Zoom.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Gallery view and virtual backgrounds are expensive
- Memory
- Moderate, plus helpers
- Disk
- Recordings if you save locally
- Network
- The call

Common problems
Camera preview spins the CPU after hang-up
Close the client fully from the tray. A leftover preview keeps CptHost alive.
People disable Windows Audio
Zoom needs the Windows audio stack. Turning off Audiosrv to "fix Zoom" breaks every other app too.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Turn off virtual background as a test
Zoom documents that effect as a GPU and CPU cost.
Check the path before you trust a second Zoom.exe
Roaming\Zoom\bin is the usual user install.
