WhatsApp.Root.exe
Also called whatsapp.root, whatsapp desktop, whatsapp windows
WhatsApp Windows host. It is the WhatsApp Desktop root process. It is not PhoneExperienceHost.exe (Phone Link).
What you need to know
WhatsApp.Root is WhatsApp, not PhoneExperienceHost (Phone Link).
WhatsApp.Root.exe is the WhatsApp Windows host. PhoneExperienceHost.exe is Microsoft Phone Link. Ending Phone Link does not sign you out of WhatsApp. A browser tab on web.whatsapp.com is still the browser.
- Safe?
- Yes, from WhatsApp Desktop
- Is it Phone Link?
- No. PhoneExperienceHost is Phone Link
- Should I end it?
- WhatsApp closes
What is WhatsApp.Root.exe?
WhatsApp.Root.exe is WhatsApp, not PhoneExperienceHost.exe. Phone Link links an Android or iPhone to Windows. WhatsApp is the Meta messenger app.
What does it do?
It hosts WhatsApp chats and calls on Windows. It may use WebView2. It does not sync Phone Link SMS. YourPhoneAppProxy.exe is still Phone Link.
Why is it running?
You opened WhatsApp Desktop, or it stayed in the tray. A leftover after you close the window can be the root host staying resident.
Is it safe?
Usually safe when WhatsApp signed
A WhatsApp-signed host under the WhatsAppDesktop WindowsApps package is the app. WhatsApp.Root.exe in Temp is not. This is still not Phone Link.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\5319275A.WhatsAppDesktop_*\WhatsApp.Root.exe
- Package family is WhatsApp Desktop
- Phone Link is Microsoft.YourPhone\PhoneExperienceHost.exe
- Do not delete WindowsApps by hand
Can I end it?
Closes WhatsApp Desktop
Ending WhatsApp.Root.exe drops chats and calls in that app. Phone Link can stay. Turn off WhatsApp launch-at-startup if you do not want it back.
Can I remove it?
Uninstall WhatsApp
Uninstall WhatsApp from Settings > Apps. Uninstalling Phone Link does not remove WhatsApp.Root.exe. Do not delete the WindowsApps package by hand.
Should it start with Windows?
WhatsApp Desktop can start with Windows from its own setting. That is not the Phone Link startup toggle.
