Spotify.exe
Also called spotify
Spotify's Windows desktop client. Helpers and crashpad processes are Spotify files. Windows Audio still uses audiodg.exe for the device graph.
What you need to know
This is the Spotify client. The Windows audio graph is a different process.
Spotify.exe is the official desktop player. It can keep a helper alive in the tray. audiodg.exe still mixes the device. Ending the wrong one mutes every app.
- Safe?
- Yes, from Spotify
- High CPU while paused?
- Hardware acceleration or a stuck helper
- Same as audiodg?
- No. audiodg is Windows audio isolation
What is Spotify.exe?
Spotify.exe is the Spotify Win32 desktop app. The Microsoft Store package can use a different install path but the same product name.
What does it do?
It streams, caches tracks, and shows the friend activity sidebar. A SpotifyCrashd or helper exe is still Spotify, not SmartScreen.
Why is it running?
You pressed play or left the tray running. Auto-start is a Spotify setting under Startup Apps or in the app.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
A signed Spotify AB binary under AppData\Roaming\Spotify is the client. Spotify.exe from a "premium crack" is malware theater.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Spotify\Spotify.exe
- Classic Win32 path
- Store install uses WindowsApps
- Publisher should be Spotify
Can I end it?
Stops playback
Ending Spotify.exe stops the music. If a helper stays, quit from the tray. Do not end Windows Audio to stop a song.
Can I remove it?
Uninstall Spotify
Use Settings > Apps. Deleting Spotify.exe leaves the cache and the updater.
Should it start with Windows?
Spotify can start with Windows from its own Settings. That is the client, not a service named Spotify.

Common problems
CPU while paused
Spotify documents hardware acceleration as a toggle. Try it before you repair Windows.
Local files scan
A huge music folder can make the client busy on startup. That is a library walk, not SearchIndexer.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Quit the tray icon, then reopen
A stuck helper is more common than a broken audio service.
Do not use a cracked client
Those binaries reuse the filename and none of the publisher story.
