SndVol.exe

Windows ProcessMicrosoft Corporation

Also called sndvol, volume mixer, sndvol.exe

WindowsSystem Component

Volume Mixer. It is the per-app volume window, not Windows Audio (Audiosrv) and not audiodg.exe (the graph).

What you need to know

This is the mixer UI. Sound still comes from Audiosrv and audiodg.exe.

SndVol.exe is Volume Mixer. Ending it hides sliders. It does not mute the PC the way disabling Windows Audio does.

Safe?
Yes. You opened Volume Mixer
Is it the audio service?
No
Should I end it?
The mixer window closes
Feex says
If I need per-app volume, I open SndVol. If there is no sound at all, I look at Windows Audio and audiodg, not at the mixer window.

What is SndVol.exe?

SndVol.exe is the Volume Mixer executable.

What does it do?

It shows device and per-app sliders. The engine stays in audiodg.exe. The service stays Audiosrv.

Why is it running?

You opened Volume Mixer from the speaker icon or Run. It should exit when the window closes.

Is it safe?

Usually safe

System32 SndVol.exe is Microsoft Volume Mixer. A SndVol.exe inside a codec pack or a "volume booster" download is not the Windows mixer.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

C:\Windows\System32\SndVol.exe

  • Mixer UI
  • Graph: audiodg.exe
  • Service: Audiosrv

Can I end it?

Closes the mixer

Ending SndVol.exe closes the slider window. Playback continues in audiodg.exe. Disabling Windows Audio is a different, louder action.

Can I remove it?

No

Do not delete SndVol.exe. You lose the supported per-app mixer. Fix silence from Windows Audio and devices, not by replacing this file.

Should it start with Windows?

On demand. Not Startup Apps.

Common problems

Mixer empty

Restart Windows Audio, then SndVol. A missing device list is the stack, not a missing slider exe.

People end audiodg to "reset mixer"

That drops all sound. Close SndVol instead.

Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

Right-click the speaker > Open volume mixer

This process should appear.

If there is no sound, do not delete SndVol

See the Windows Audio article.
