slack.exe
Also called slack
Slack's Windows desktop client. Extra slack.exe rows are Electron helpers, not extra workspaces you installed by hand.
What you need to know
This is the Slack desktop client. Teams is a different process and a different vendor.
slack.exe is Electron Slack. Several copies are GPU and renderer processes. It is not ms-teams.exe and it is not Outlook.
- Safe?
- Yes, from the Slack app
- Heavy on RAM?
- Workspaces and Electron, yes
- Same as Teams?
- No. Different vendor and exe
What is slack.exe?
slack.exe is the Slack desktop application. It is Chromium-based Electron. The website in a browser is a different process name entirely.
What does it do?
It keeps websocket connections to workspaces, shows notifications, and can stay in the tray after the window closes.
Why is it running?
You signed into Slack or Windows restored the window. A slack.exe from a "desktop gadget" site is not the Salesforce-owned client.
Why are there multiple copies?
Electron GPU and renderer processes share the image name. Slack Process Manager inside the app is the useful split.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
A signed Slack build under Local\slack is expected. slack.exe in a zip next to a crack is not.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\slack\slack.exe
- Per-user Electron install
- Publisher: Slack Technologies
- Not Teams
Can I end it?
Drops notifications until you reopen
Ending slack.exe signs that client out of the tray. You will miss mentions until it starts again. It does not delete the workspace.
Can I remove it?
Uninstall Slack
Use Settings > Apps. Deleting slack.exe leaves the updater and cached workspaces.
Should it start with Windows?
Slack can launch hidden in the tray. That is a Slack preference, not a Windows service.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Huddles, huddle video, and huge channels
- Memory
- Grows with workspace count
- Disk
- Cache under AppData
- Network
- Always-on for messages

Common problems
RAM after many workspaces
Slack documents cache reset. That is an app fix, not a Windows Search rebuild.
People end all Electron apps at once
Code.exe and slack.exe are different products that happen to share a framework.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Reset the Slack cache from Slack Help
Do not delete AppData blindly while the app is open.
Check Launch Slack on login in preferences
That checkbox is the startup story.
