Photoshop.exe
Also called photoshop process, photoshop.exe, ps.exe
The main Adobe Photoshop application process. It is the program you opened, not a Windows system file.
What you need to know
This is Adobe Photoshop, not a Windows system process.
Photoshop.exe is the main program window. You see it when Photoshop is open. Ending it closes the app. It does not belong to Windows.
- What is it?
- Adobe Photoshop, the app
- Part of Windows?
- No
- Should I close it?
- Yes, if you are done. Save first
What is Photoshop.exe?
Photoshop.exe is the main executable for Adobe Photoshop. It is an application you install. It is not a Windows component, a service host, or a background system file.
What does it do?
It runs the Photoshop editor: the canvas, tools, panels, and file handling. Helper processes from Creative Cloud may also appear. Those belong to Adobe too, not to Windows.
Why is it running?
You see it because Photoshop is open, launching, or still closing. If you did not start Photoshop, someone or something on the PC did, such as a file association or a leftover window.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
A copy from an Adobe install folder, signed by Adobe, is the normal application. A file with this name under Windows\System32 is not the expected location.
A current Adobe install usually lives under a path like this. The year folder changes with the release:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2026\Photoshop.exe
- Expected publisher: Adobe
- Expected location: Program Files\Adobe, not Windows\System32
- The filename alone is not proof of safety
Can I end it?
Yes, if you are done
Ending Photoshop.exe closes Photoshop. Save open documents first. That is quitting the app, not repairing Windows.
Can I remove it?
Uninstall the app
Do not delete Photoshop.exe by hand. If you do not want Photoshop, uninstall Adobe Photoshop from Apps in Windows. Deleting the executable leaves a broken install.
Should it start with Windows?
Photoshop does not need to start with Windows. Creative Cloud helpers can stay in the background after you quit. Those are Adobe desktop pieces, not a reason to treat Photoshop.exe as a system process.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Moderate to high on large files and filters
- Memory
- Can be high on layered documents
- Disk
- Scratch-disk use while you edit
- Network
- Usually low unless cloud or stock features are in use

Common problems
High memory or CPU
Large documents, smart objects, and history states consume RAM and CPU. This is often the app doing work, not malware. Close unused files before you assume the process is stuck.
Still running after you close the window
Photoshop can take a moment to flush scratch data. If it stays for a long time with no window, end it after you confirm there is nothing unsaved.
Unexpected location
A Photoshop.exe outside an Adobe Program Files folder is not the normal install. Confirm the path and publisher before you delete anything.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Confirm the path and publisher
Open the process properties and check that it runs from Program Files\Adobe and is signed by Adobe. This is the first check.
Save, then quit from the app
Use File, Exit or close the window. Ending the process in Task Manager skips a clean save.
Do not treat it like a Windows file
Do not delete Photoshop.exe from System32 (it should not be there) or from the Adobe folder as a first step. Uninstall the product if you want it gone.
