msiexec.exe
Also called msiexec, windows installer, msiexec.exe
Windows Installer. It installs, repairs, and uninstalls MSI and some Setup.exe packages that still call the installer service.
What you need to know
This is Windows Installer, not the app you are installing.
msiexec.exe is the Windows Installer host. A silent repair, a pending reboot, or a stuck MSI can keep it running after the wizard closed. It is not Chrome Setup.
- Safe?
- Yes, in System32
- Why is it running with no wizard?
- A repair or a pending reboot
- Should I end it?
- You can leave a broken install
What is msiexec.exe?
msiexec.exe is Windows Installer. It talks to the msiserver service, writes to the installer cache under Windows\Installer, and can reboot when a file is in use.
What does it do?
It applies MSI tables. MSIX and many modern Store apps do not use it. A Setup.exe might still extract an MSI and call this host.
Why is it running?
An install, uninstall, repair, or advertised shortcut just ran. A copy that lasts for hours with no UI is a stuck custom action or a pending reboot.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
System32 msiexec is the OS installer. An msiexec.exe in a software-crack folder is not Windows Installer.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Windows\System32\msiexec.exe
- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Service: msiserver
- Cache: C:\Windows\Installer
Can I end it?
Can orphan a package
Ending msiexec mid-transaction can leave the product in Installer rollback or "Configuring" at every logon. Prefer Cancel on the wizard, then a reboot.
Can I remove it?
No
Do not delete msiexec.exe. Repair Windows Installer with the supported Microsoft package if the service will not start.
Should it start with Windows?
Advertised shortcuts and pending operations can start it at logon. That is Installer, not a chat app.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Rises during file copy and custom actions
- Memory
- Moderate
- Disk
- High while the cache is written
- Network
- Source MSI on a share

Common problems
Configuring at every sign-in
A broken advertised shortcut or a failed upgrade is retrying. Use Programs and Features to repair or remove that product.
Error 1618
Another install is already running. Wait or reboot. Do not start a second msiexec on purpose.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Check the command line for the product
msiexec /x {GUID} or /fvomus tells you which package. The host name does not.
Do not empty Windows\Installer by hand
That cache is how repair works. Disk cleanup has a supported Windows Installer option on some SKUs.
