msedge.exe
Also called msedge, microsoft edge, edge
The main Microsoft Edge process. Extra copies are usually tabs and helpers, like other Chromium browsers.
What you need to know
This is Microsoft Edge, not svchost.
msedge.exe is the Edge browser. Windows also uses Edge WebView for some system UI, so you can see Edge-related processes even when you prefer another browser.
- Windows process?
- No. This is Edge
- Many copies?
- Normal for tabs
- Can I uninstall it?
- Current Windows ships Edge. Removal is limited
What is msedge.exe?
msedge.exe is Microsoft Edge. It is a Chromium-based browser that ships with current Windows.
What does it do?
It shows web pages and some Windows UI that embeds Edge WebView2. Those are related products, not extra viruses named Edge.
Why is it running?
You opened Edge, a link used it, or a Windows feature loaded a WebView.
Why are there multiple copies?
Like Chrome, Edge splits tabs and utilities. Several copies are expected.
Is it safe?
Usually safe if the path is Edge
The legitimate browser lives under Microsoft\Edge\Application. A random msedge.exe in Temp is not that file.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe
- 64-bit machines still often use the (x86) path
- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation
Can I end it?
Quit Edge, or close the feature using WebView
Ending one process can close a tab or a Settings page that embedded Edge. Quit the window you meant to close.
Can I remove it?
Do not delete the exe
Edge is a Windows component on current versions. Deleting msedge.exe can break Widgets, WebView apps, and Windows features.
Should it start with Windows?
Edge can start with Windows if you allow it. That is an Edge or Windows setting, not a reason to delete the browser.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Follows the tab or WebView
- Memory
- Can be high with many tabs
- Disk
- Profile and cache
- Network
- Active while pages load

Common problems
Runs when you use another browser
WebView2 and some Windows surfaces use the Edge engine. Check which window is actually open.
High RAM
Tabs and sleeping-tab settings matter. This is the same class of problem as Chrome.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Confirm the path and signature
Open the process properties and check that msedge.exe runs from the expected folder and is signed by the expected publisher. This is the first check, not a Registry edit.
See what the process is doing
Task Manager can show CPU, memory, disk, and GPU. High use during an obvious job is often normal. High use when the PC is idle needs a closer look at the related app or service.
Avoid destructive first steps
Do not delete msedge.exe, disable critical services without knowing the effect, or edit the Registry as the first move.
