hostname.exe
Also called hostname, computer name command
Prints the computer name to the console, then exits. It is a command, not a service and not a background host.
What you need to know
hostname prints the name, it is not a service.
hostname.exe writes the DNS hostname to stdout. Scripts and Command Prompt call it. It is not Computer Browser, not Dnscache, and not a tray app.
- Safe?
- Yes, in System32
- Is it a service?
- No. It prints and exits
- Should it stay running?
- No. A stuck copy is unusual
What is hostname.exe?
hostname.exe prints the computer name. It is not a service. The binary is a short-lived Windows command in System32.
What does it do?
It reads the hostname and writes one line. It does not rename the PC. That is Settings or Rename-Computer. It does not stay resident.
Why is it running?
A script, an installer, or you typed hostname. If it is still running minutes later, something launched it in a loop or the name is a fake path.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
System32 hostname.exe is the command. A hostname.exe in a toolkit zip is not that command.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Windows\System32\hostname.exe
- CLI only
- Not a service
- Expected to exit immediately
Can I end it?
Usually already gone
Ending hostname.exe only matters if a loop keeps spawning it. Stopping a service named something else will not cancel this command.
Can I remove it?
No
Do not delete hostname.exe. Scripts that print the computer name will fail. Renaming the PC is a Settings change.
Should it start with Windows?
A script may call it at logon. It should not be a Startup Apps row of its own.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Negligible
- Memory
- Tiny, then gone
- Disk
- None
- Network
- None. It prints a local name

Common problems
People look for a Hostname service
There is not one for this exe. Computer Name lives in Settings > System > About.
Loop in a broken logon script
The parent is cmd.exe or powershell.exe. Fix the script. Do not delete System32\hostname.exe.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
See the parent process
Command Prompt or PowerShell usually started it. That parent is the story.
Open file location
System32 only. Any other folder is a different program.
