GameBar.exe is the Xbox Game Bar window. GameBarPresenceWriter.exe only writes presence so widgets can find the title. Ending GameBar does not kill the game.
- Safe?
- Yes, with Xbox Game Bar
- Is it the game?
- No. It is the overlay
- Should I end it?
- The overlay closes
What is GameBar.exe?
GameBar.exe is the Xbox Game Bar overlay UI. It is not the game and it is not GameBarPresenceWriter.exe. The package is Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay.
What does it do?
It draws widgets, capture, and the Win+G chrome. Presence writer only signals that a title is active. The game image still renders the world.
Why is it running?
You pressed Win+G, a shortcut opened Game Bar, or Gaming settings keep the overlay enabled. A writer can run without this UI on screen.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
The XboxGamingOverlay package is Game Bar. A GameBar.exe in a trainer zip is not the overlay.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay_*\GameBar.exe
- Overlay UI
- Presence writer: GameBarPresenceWriter.exe
- Disable Game Bar in Settings
Can I end it?
Closes the overlay
Ending GameBar.exe hides Win+G. The game stays. Presence writer can stay until you turn Game Bar off.
Can I remove it?
Turn Game Bar off, or uninstall the overlay
Settings > Gaming > Game Bar is the switch. Do not delete WindowsApps files. Do not delete GameBarPresenceWriter.exe to hide the UI.
Should it start with Windows?
Game Bar can start with a game if the overlay is on. That is a Gaming setting, not a Discord Startup row.

Overlay on a non-game window
Game Bar can attach to more than titles. Turn it off in Settings. Ending only the presence writer leaves this UI install in place.
People think the writer is the overlay
Writer publishes presence. This process is the window.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Settings > Gaming > Game Bar
The off switch for the overlay. Win+G will stop opening this process.
Confirm WindowsApps, not a cheat folder
Open file location. Presence writer is System32. This UI is the Store package.
