firefox.exe
Also called firefox, mozilla firefox
Mozilla Firefox's browser process. Extra firefox.exe rows are usually content, GPU, or extension processes, not extra browsers you installed.
What you need to know
Several firefox.exe rows are Gecko multiprocess, not a cloned install.
firefox.exe is Firefox. Mozilla splits content, GPU, and extensions into extra processes. That is different from Chrome, where every helper is also named chrome.exe but the isolation story is Chromium.

What is firefox.exe?
firefox.exe is the Mozilla Firefox browser. The first process is the parent. Extra copies are content or utility processes that Firefox started.
What does it do?
It renders pages with Gecko, not Chromium. about:processes names the role. It does not host wuauserv and it does not scan with Defender.
Why is it running?
You opened Firefox, or a link handed off to it. A copy from a random Downloads folder with a Mozilla icon is not the installed browser.
Why are there multiple copies?
Multiprocess Firefox is expected. One parent plus content processes. about:processes is the map, not Task Manager filenames alone.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
A signed Mozilla build under Program Files\Mozilla Firefox is the real browser. firefox.exe next to a "free codec" installer is a different file.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
- Expected publisher: Mozilla Corporation
- User installs can live under AppData\Local\Mozilla Firefox
- about:processes explains extra copies
Can I end it?
Closes those tabs
Ending a content process crashes that tab. Ending the parent closes Firefox. It does not uninstall Mozilla.
Can I remove it?
Uninstall Firefox, do not delete the exe
Use Settings > Apps or the Firefox uninstaller. Deleting firefox.exe leaves profiles and helpers behind.
Should it start with Windows?
Firefox can restore the session at logon if you left it running. That is a Firefox setting, not a Windows service.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Follows the heaviest tab or WebGL page
- Memory
- Grows with content processes and trackers
- Disk
- Profile and cache under AppData
- Network
- Active while pages and sync run

Common problems
High memory versus Chrome
Different engine, similar tab math. about:memory is Firefox-specific. Chrome Task Manager will not list these processes.
Crash helper
crashreporter.exe or a Mozilla crash process is not the browser. Do not delete firefox.exe to stop crash reports.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Use about:processes and about:memory
Those pages name the expensive tab. Task Manager only shows firefox.exe.
Try Troubleshoot Mode before a reset
Extensions are a common CPU source. Mozilla documents Troubleshoot Mode for that.
