DISMHost.exe

Windows ProcessMicrosoft Corporation

Also called dismhost, dism host, dism helper

WindowsSystem Component

DISM helper host. DISM or TrustedInstaller servicing can spawn it for an image operation. It is not TiWorker applying CBS packages as the main Trusted Installer worker.

What you need to know

DISMHost is a DISM worker, not TiWorker applying CBS packages as the main trusted installer.

DISMHost.exe is a helper the DISM engine starts so an image or package operation can run out of process. TiWorker.exe is Windows Modules Installer Worker for CBS. TrustedInstaller.exe owns the servicing contract. Ending DISMHost does not finish a cumulative update the way TiWorker does.

Safe?
Yes, during DISM or servicing
Same as TiWorker?
No. This is a DISM worker
Should I end it?
Not mid-DISM
Feex says
If DISM /Online is running, I expect DISMHost. I do not end TiWorker to stop a DISM mount, and I do not take ownership of System32 to "speed it up."

What is DISMHost.exe?

DISMHost is a DISM worker, not TiWorker applying CBS packages as the main trusted installer. TiWorker.exe does CBS apply. TrustedInstaller.exe is the Modules Installer. This host is DISM's helper.

What does it do?

It performs DISM work (image mount, package add, cleanup requested through DISM). It does not replace the WinSxS CBS worker and it does not draw Windows Update UI.

Why is it running?

Someone ran DISM, an installer called DISM, or servicing used the DISM stack. Idle DISMHost should exit when that operation ends.

Is it safe?

Usually safe

System32\Dism\DISMHost.exe is Microsoft. A DISMHost.exe in Downloads is not. This is still not TiWorker.exe.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

C:\Windows\System32\Dism\DISMHost.exe

  • DISM helper host
  • CBS worker sibling: TiWorker.exe under WinSxS
  • Contract sibling: TrustedInstaller.exe

Can I end it?

Not mid-DISM

Ending DISMHost.exe can fail an in-flight DISM operation. Ending TiWorker mid-CBS is a different, update-apply risk. Let DISM finish or reboot if Setup asks.

Can I remove it?

No

Do not delete DISMHost.exe. Component cleanup is a DISM command, not Explorer. Do not delete TiWorker or TrustedInstaller, and do not delete System32.

Should it start with Windows?

A DISM operation starts it. It is not Startup Apps. TiWorker starts from Modules Installer, not from this helper.

Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

CPU
Can rise during an image or package op
Memory
Moderate on a large WIM or cleanup
Disk
High while an image is mounted or WinSxS is scanned via DISM
Network
Usually none unless DISM pulls a source

File information

DISMHost.exe file information
Executable name DISMHost.exe
Common legitimate path C:\Windows\System32\Dism\DISMHost.exe
Publisher Microsoft Corporation
Signature expectation Signed by Microsoft Windows

Common problems

People end TiWorker because they saw DISM in a log

CBS apply is TiWorker. A DISM /RestoreHealth helper is this host. End the wrong one and you interrupt the wrong stack.

Stuck DISM mount after an optimizer killed DISMHost

dism /cleanup-wim or a reboot. Replacing TrustedInstaller.exe will not unmount that image.

Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

Check the parent: Dism.exe versus TrustedInstaller

A Command Prompt DISM is this article's usual parent. A Windows Update CBS spike without DISM is TiWorker.

Let the DISM command finish, then review CBS.log only if it failed

Do not run random TrustedInstaller ACL scripts. Do not delete files from System32\Dism.
