ChxSmartScreen.exe
Also called chxsmartscreen, smartscreen app, apprep
SmartScreen App Reputation UX host. It is the Windows 10/11 packaged prompt surface that SmartScreen can show, not the smartscreen.exe reputation engine.
What you need to know
This draws some SmartScreen warnings. smartscreen.exe still does the reputation check.
ChxSmartScreen.exe is the AppRep packaged UI. You see it when SmartScreen needs a modern prompt. Ending it dismisses that window. It does not disable reputation lookups.
- Safe?
- Yes, as a Windows package
- Same as smartscreen.exe?
- No. This one is the prompt UI
- Should I end it?
- The warning window closes
What is ChxSmartScreen.exe?
ChxSmartScreen.exe is the SmartScreen App Reputation experience host in SystemApps. It is an AppX package, not System32\smartscreen.exe.
What does it do?
It renders a warning or more-info page. The lookup still goes through SmartScreen. MsMpEng.exe may also scan the same file.
Why is it running?
You launched a Mark-of-the-Web file or an unrecognized app. The process should exit after you choose Run or Don't run.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
The Microsoft SystemApps package is the prompt. A ChxSmartScreen.exe in Downloads is not AppRep.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.AppRep.ChxApp_*\ChxSmartScreen.exe
- Packaged UI
- Engine: smartscreen.exe
- Not Defender file scan
Can I end it?
Closes the warning
Ending ChxSmartScreen.exe is like closing the dialog. SmartScreen policy stays. Use Windows Security to change reputation settings.
Can I remove it?
No
Do not delete the AppRep package. You would lose the supported SmartScreen warning UI. Reputation policy lives in Windows Security, not in Explorer.
Should it start with Windows?
SmartScreen starts it on demand. It is not a tray app.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
