What is ChatGPT.exe?

ChatGPT.exe is ChatGPT desktop, not claude.exe. OpenAI ships this app. Anthropic ships claude.exe.

What does it do?

It hosts the ChatGPT window. It does not host Claude. Microsoft Edge is still msedge.exe if you only use the website.

Why is it running?

You opened the ChatGPT Windows app, or it stayed in the tray. A ChatGPT.exe from an unofficial store listing is the case to inspect.

Why are there multiple copies?

Helpers can reuse ChatGPT.exe. That is still OpenAI. It is not claude.exe.

Is it safe?

Usually safe when OpenAI signed

An OpenAI-signed ChatGPT.exe under Programs\ChatGPT or WindowsApps is the app. ChatGPT.exe in Temp is not. This is still not Claude.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\Programs\ChatGPT\ChatGPT.exe

Store installs can live under WindowsApps
Publisher should be OpenAI
Not claude.exe

Can I end it?

Closes ChatGPT desktop

Ending ChatGPT.exe closes the OpenAI desktop app. claude.exe can stay open. Unsaved drafts in ChatGPT are not in Claude.

Can I remove it?

Uninstall ChatGPT

Uninstall ChatGPT from Settings > Apps. Uninstalling Claude does not remove ChatGPT.exe. Leave the other desktop AI app alone.

Should it start with Windows?

ChatGPT can start with Windows from its own setting. That is not the Claude startup toggle.
