AM5
Also called socket am5, am5 socket
AMD desktop socket for Ryzen 7000 and later AM5 chips. It uses DDR5 memory. It is not AM4.
What you need to know
AM5 is the current AMD desktop socket family.
Ryzen 7000 and later AM5 chips use this socket and DDR5. AM4 boards do not take these CPUs. A later AM5 chip still needs a listed BIOS.
- Fits AM4 coolers?
- Many do with a kit. Check the cooler
- DDR4?
- Desktop AM5 is DDR5
- Later Ryzen on same board?
- If the list and BIOS say so
What AM5 is
AM5 is AMD's desktop socket for Ryzen 7000 and subsequent AM5 generations. It is an LGA-style socket, unlike the PGA pins on AM4 CPUs.
What it means on a PC
You need an AM5 motherboard and DDR5. Cooler compatibility is usually good with an AM5 kit, but the vendor list still wins.
Upgrade notes
Staying on AM5 for a later Zen chip is a BIOS and QVL problem. Leaving AM4 is a platform change.
- Do not force an AM5 CPU into AM4
- Update BIOS for newer SKUs
- Read the memory QVL
